🌪️ DeepSeek’s R1 disrupts Wall Street
🚨 Our Report — The release of ChatGPT rival, R1, by small Chinese start-up DeepSeek, last week, has sent shockwaves through the global AI industry and stock markets, as it overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded app in the US, prompting VC, Marc Andreessen, to call it “AI’s Sputnik moment.”
🔓 Key Points:
DeepSeek confirmed that it spent less than $6M on computing power to develop and train R1 (for context, OpenAI reportedly spent up to $4B training ChatGPT), using just 2,000 less-advanced NVIDIA AI chips.
Despite this, R1 reportedly rivals OpenAI’s o1 on performance, which President Trump feels should be a “wake-up” call for the US, as he calls for tech firms to come up with “faster and much less expensive methods.”
As a result, Wall Street suffered huge repercussions, in particular, major player NVIDIA, which lost nearly $6B as its shares fell by 17%, which is the biggest one-day loss in Wall Street history.
🔐 Relevance — The record-breaking cheaper but equally as capable R1 model—built using fewer, less advanced AI chips—has challenged US dominance in AI and raised questions about whether AI models need expensive, high-end, advanced AI chips and hardware from the likes of NVIDIA, as, OpenAI raised $6.6B to develop ChatGPT, DeepSeek developed R1 for less than $10M.

🧠 Meta’s controversial AI memory
🚨 Our Report — After first teasing the idea last year, Meta is officially launching improvements to its cross-platform chatbot, Meta AI, which allows it to “remember” details from conversations and provide more relevant recommendations and suggestions to Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp users in the US and Canada.
🔓 Key Points:
The memory feature, which is similar to ChatGPT’s and Gemini’s, enables Meta AI to “pick up details based on context,” eg. if a user says they’re vegan and asks Meta AI for recipe ideas, it will just show them vegan recipes.
Meta AI will also (somewhat controversially) use users’ information from their Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram accounts—including age, gender, and interests—to give more personalized responses.
For example, it could use your home location, listed on your Facebook profile, and the reels you’ve recently watched to suggest and recommend local live events, giving you “answers based on the information you’ve shared.”
🔐 Relevance — Although Meta has confirmed that its AI will not remember information shared in group chats–-just from one-on-one conversations—and “memories” can be deleted at any time, users are unable to “opt-out” of the AI memory feature, as Meta believes that “the best experiences are personalized,” but given how little people trust Meta with their data, especially Facebook data, it’ll be interesting to see how this feature will be received.

🚫 DeepSeek forced to shutdown
Following the major disruption caused by DeepSeek’s R1 model (see above news story), DeepSeek was forced to temporarily stop new user registrations “due to large-scale malicious attacks” on its services.
The malicious attack came after R1 overtook ChatGPT as the most downloaded app in the Apple and Google Play stores, and caused major tech companies and investors to drop a significant amount of capital.
DeepSeek confirmed that, after two hours of monitoring, it was the victim of a “large-scale malicious attack,” although existing users were still able to log in, and the app is allowing registrations again.
