EXPORTS

Our Report: The US Government is reportedly considering capping the sale of NVIDIA and AMD AI chips to certain Persian Gulf countriesβincluding the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabiaβto address national security concerns.
π Key Points:
If they go through with it, these new restrictions will be similar to those the US Government imposed on the export of advanced AI chips (from the likes of NVIDIA and AMD) and related equipment to China.
In 2022, they stopped NVIDIA and AMD from selling their AI chips and placed export restrictions on 40 other countries across the Middle East, Africa, and Asia, to prevent the indirect sale of AI chips to China.
The US and its alliesβNetherlands, Germany, South Korea, and Japanβhave been strengthening their restrictions on access to AI hardware in China as US AI chips give them a key advantage on the global AI stage.
π€ Why you should care: The US government hasnβt released this information publicly yet, (although they did disclose, a few months ago, that more regulations were coming following the restrictions on China), but theyβre considering restricting sales of AI chips to countries within the Persian Gulf because theyβre concerned about how AI is being developed in these countriesβnot just from a human rights perspective, but also βfrom the perspective of safety and counterintelligence risksβ---as Saudi Arabia and UAE, particularly, are investing heavily in AI.

ETHICS

Our Report: Following their ongoing case against OpenAI for using their content to train ChatGPT, The New York Times (NYT) has issued AI search engine start-upβPerplexityβwith a cease and desist letter demanding they stop using their content, without a license, for their AI training and summaries
π Key Points:
The NYT has called Perplexity βunjustly enrichedβ because theyβre using their βcarefully written researched, and edited journalism without a licenseβ (Forbes and CondΓ© Nast made similar statements, earlier this year).
In response, Perplexity said it had βno interest in being anyoneβs antagonist,β but did argue that βno one organization owns the copyright over factsβ and all it's doing is βindexing web pages and surfacing factual content.β
CEOβAravind Srinivasβsaid the start-up would be willing to work with the NYT (as itβs doing with several other publishers) through ad revenue-sharing schemes and subscriptions to partner publications.
π€ Why you should care: This isnβt the first publication to accuse Perplexity of unethically scraping content and a recent study by Copyleaks (a plagiarism tool that checks for AI-generated content) shows that, as well as scraping content from public sites for its AI summaries, it was also summarizing paywalled content.

RETAIL
Google Shopping is rolling out an AI-powered βfor youβ feed (on desktop and mobile), which shows shoppers a personalized stream of products they might like, based on their search and YouTube history.
Although Google will surface personalized products and in-line videos, if shoppers are shown something they dislike, they can give it a βthumbs-down,β preventing Google from showing anything similar.
Itβs also introducing an AI summary feature that gives shoppers tips on what products to look for and why they should consider the items theyβre shown, which Google has summarized from reviews on the web.

RECRUITMENT
OpenAI has hired ex-Palantir (which builds data analysis software and frequently works with US military and Government officials) Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), Dane Stuckley, as its new CISO.
Stuckley, whoβll be working with head of security, Matt Knight, believes βsecurity is germane to OpenAIβs mission,β and is, therefore, βexcited for this next chapter, and canβt wait to help secure a future where AI benefits us all.β
This comes after OpenAI recently posted a job listing for a βHead of Trusted Compute and Cryptographyβ to build βsecure AI infrastructure,β as its safety protocols have been questioned, after the exit of several key security figures.
