Read Time: 4 minutes
Our Report: The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has finalized its review on generative AI, proposing seven principles for the responsible development and usage of foundation models.
π Key Points:
The CMA's seven proposed principles aim to ensure consumer protection and include: Accountability, Access, Diversity, Choice, Flexibility, Fair dealing & Transparency
Will Hayter, senior director for CMA's Digital Markets Unit (DMU), expressed that the regulator's objective is to nudge the market towards positive outcomes using these principles.
This report is a result of collaborative efforts from AI labs, tech firms, academics, and civil societyβwith results generated from over 70 different organizations.
The CMA won't quickly restrict AI advancementsβand regulations, when they do comeβwill be specific to ensure the cutting-edge isnβt dulled by governmental oversight.
π€¨ Why you should care: With AIβs potential to influence markets, these guidelines will play a pivotal role in shaping future regulatory decisions, and set the tone for other Western nationsβincluding the USβin regulating AI.
