Our Report: Pulitzer-winning authors have joined the authors vs OpenAI/Microsoft copyright lawsuit, which accuses OpenAI of misusing authorsβ data to train ChatGPT.
π Key Points:
A group of 11 nonfiction authors, including Pulitzer Prize winners Taylor Branch, Stacy Schiff, and Kai Bird, have joined a Manhattan federal court lawsuit against OpenAI and Microsoft.
The writers seek fair compensation and treatment, claiming billions of dollars have been made from their unauthorized use of nonfiction booksβwhich is not an untrue claim after many AI models have been found to be trained on copyright data.
Lastly, the authors have demanded monetary damages and an order for the companies to stop infringing their copyrights. As of right now, neither OpenAI nor Microsoft have responded to the allegations.
π€¨ Why you should care: This lawsuit highlights the complex legal terrain of AI technology and copyright, potentially setting a precedent for how AI companies use copyrighted materials in model training. As weβve mentioned multiple times before, data is about to become more important than ever.

OpenAI has published a "Preparedness Framework" as a proactive measure for safely developing advanced AI systems, which aims to monitor, assess, and mitigate potential catastrophic risks associated with AI advancements.
Part of OpenAI's commitment to transparent and responsible AI development, the document includes a risk assessment team, a Safety Advisory Group, and risk level labels ranging from "low" to "critical."βreflecting OpenAI's awareness of the complexities and potential dangers in AI development; also emphasizing the need for cautious progression and regulatory oversight.
Stanford researchers have found that LAION-5B, a dataset used for training AI image generation models like Stable Diffusion, contained over a thousand links to child sexual abuse material (CSAM).
The discovery was made during a thorough examination of the dataset, which scrapes images and alt text from the internet but does not store the images directly, and the findings raised concerns about the potential for AI models to inadvertently learn and reproduce harmful content.
