Our Report: On the final day of OpenAI’s ‘12 Days of OpenAI’ campaign, they previewed a new family of ‘reasoning’ models—o3 and o3 mini—after launching its predecessor (o1) in September (deciding to bypass calling it ‘o2’ to prevent confusion or trademark issues with the British telecom company, O2) which is capable of working its way through problems, ‘fact-checking’ itself, to circumnavigate common AI model mistakes.
🔑 Key Points:
o3 and o3 mini aren’t publicly available yet, but testers can apply to preview and test the o3 mini version, with OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, revealing plans to launch it at the end of January, followed by o3, later
According to OpenAI, the o3 family surpasses o1 in coding, beating it by 22.8% in industry-standard coding benchmark tests, and outscoring OpenAI’s Chief Scientist in competitive programming.
It also excels in Math, scoring 96.7% on the 2024 American Invitational Mathematics Exam, and solving 25.2% of problems on EpochAI’s Frontier Math benchmark test (no other AI model has solved more than 2%).
🤔 Why you should care: Although these performance results are impressive, there is concern among safety testers after they found o1 could deceive human users at a higher level than ‘’non-reasoning’’ models—including those from Meta, Google, and Anthropic—meaning o3 has the potential to deceive humans at an even higher level, although OpenAI has revealed that it’s using a new technique—deliberative alignment—to train both o1 and o3 on its safety principles.

Our Report: Google is reportedly about to add a new “AI Mode” to its search engine which, once activated, will open up a Gemini chatbot interface, allowing users to ask further questions about their search results, and have a more conversational search experience, similar to what AI search engine, Perplexity, offers.
🔑 Key Points:
Although Google already has ‘AI Overviews’—which uses AI to summarize answers to search queries— ‘AI Mode’ will enable users to ask questions, continue the conversation, and get more in-depth answers.
Users will be able to switch to ‘AI Mode’ from the top of the results page, and will get links to related web pages and a search bar, below the conversational answer, prompting them to ‘Ask a follow-up question.’
This feature was initially spotted earlier this month when a beta version of an ‘AI Mode’ button was found in Google’s code, along with the ability to search using voice and a conversation history button.
🤔 Why you should care: Google is no doubt releasing this AI search feature to hold onto its search market share amid increasing pressure from its competitors who have released AI-focused features: OpenAI has recently released ChatGPT Search and Microsoft has integrated ChatGPT into its Bing search engine, for example.

Following the announcement of its new reasoning model family—o3—reports have surfaced that the next generation of OpenAI’s GPT—GPT-5—is “behind schedule and running up “huge bills.”
Codenamed Project Orion, GPT-5 was expected to be released in mid-2024, but during testing, it fell short of expectations due to a lack of diverse, high-quality training data, limiting the model’s learning capacity.
Altman originally blamed the delay on the company’s focus on its first reasoning model–o1—but the many high-profile exits—including co-founder and chief scientist Ilya Sutskever and CTO, Mira Murat—could be a reason.

Donald Trump has named former a16z partner—Sriram Krishnam—as his AI Senior Policy Advisor at the White House Office of Science and Technology to “help shape and coordinate AI policy across government.”
Working with ex-PayPal COO, David Sacks (who Trump recently named as his crypto and AI czar), Krishnan is “honored” to serve the USA, and “ensure continued American leadership in AI.”
Krishnan previously led product teams at Microsoft, Twitter, Yahoo! Facebook, and Snap, and has a relationship with Elon Musk (co-leader of the Department of Government Efficiency), who he helped rebuild Twitter into X.
