CRIME

Our Report: Over the past three months, OpenAI researchers have found and banned five covert Influence Operations (IOs) that were using ChatGPT to spread disinformation, in an attempt to manipulate public opinion.
π Key Points:
The IOs originated from Russia, China, Israel, and Iran, and several operators were already known by authorities: In March, the US treasury sanctioned 2 Russians behind one of the campaigns.
The malicious actors were using ChatGPT to create and post propaganda content (translating it into different languages), conducting open-source research, and debugging simple code.
None of the IOs gained traction or reached large audiences, and were discovered quickly because human error exposed the content they were posting was generated by AI.
π€ Why you should care: These particular campaigns didnβt make much impact, but it shows how malicious actors are exploiting AI tools, like ChatGPT, to scale up propaganda campaigns and change public opinion, putting pressure on companies, like OpenAI, to integrate stricter guardrails and protocols that restrict the use of their tool.

AUGMENTED REALITY
πΆοΈ Googleβs Magic Leap forward

Our Report: Google has formed a strategic partnership with Magic Leapβa leader in Augmented Reality (AR) devicesβa collaboration designed to explore new possibilities in AR.
π Key Points:
The partnership will combine Magic Leapβs AR experience with Googleβs tech platforms to βfoster the future of the XR [Extended Reality] ecosystem with innovative product offerings.β
Magic Leap will benefit from the collaboration by getting its AR technology out to a wider audience, and Google will get to redefine its place in the AR world.
This partnership aligns with Googleβs Project Astra, which they demoed at the I/O conference, which allows people to interact with an AI chatbot, via a pair of smart glasses.
π€ Why you should care: This isnβt Googleβs first foray into AR: They were forced to discontinue Google Glassβvoice and motion-controlled smart glassesβfollowing privacy concerns, high costs, and poor functionality, so this partnership could produce some interesting possibilities.

HUMANITY
π OpenAI stands for humanity
Our Report: OpenAI is giving non-profits discounted access to ChatGPT and universities a new ChatGPT, in a bid to improve access to its technology.
π Key Points:
Non-profits will get ChatGPT Team and Enterprise subscriptions for a discounted rate (which starts at $20p/m) to help with funding, staffing shortages, and operational difficulties.
Universities will get ChatGPT Eduβa ChatGPT designed for University studentsβwhich is powered by the latest model (GPT-4o) and will help with tutoring and grant applications.
The University of Pennsylvania is already using ChatGPT Edu to complete reflection assignments, form a deeper engagement with course materials, and analyze data.
π€ Why you should care: OpenAI is launching these initiatives to make its technology more accessible to those working to better humanity and create positive social change.
AI SEARCH
βοΈGoogleβs AI pullback
Our Report: In response to criticism earlier this week, Google is scaling back its AI-powered search featureβAI Overviewsβafter it produced a stream of incorrect and absurd responses, including telling users to put glue in their pizza sauce and that people should eat "at least one small rock a day."
π Key Points:
Googleβs Head of Search, Liz Reid, said that AI Overviews presents misinformation because Google takes out-of-context, humourous content from forums and social media.
To rectify this, Google has added guardrails to detect βnonsensical queriesβ and hide AI results to those queries, and also prompt restrictions when there isnβt enough data.
Google already prevents AI-generated news or health-related results, so any absurd responses encouraging people to smoke while pregnant, for example, are reportedly "faked screenshots."
π€ Why you should care: Googleβs latest AI scandal comes after it was forced to take down its AI image generator in February because it was caught producing biased, historical misrepresentations.
