Our Report: Thirteen current and former OpenAI and Google Deepmind employees have signed an open letter—entitled “A Right to Warn about Advanced Artificial Intelligence”—voicing concerns about a lack of safety oversight and governance in the AI industry and asking for better protection for whistleblowers.
🔑 Key Points:
The letter warns that AI companies possess “substantial information” about the risks, capabilities, and limitations of their systems but have “weak obligations” to share this publicly.
It says they have incentives to swerve “effective oversight”, can’t be relied upon to share information voluntarily, and corporate governance structures aren’t enough to change this.
It also acknowledges that AI employees are uniquely positioned to hold these companies accountable, and asks for greater industry whistle-blower protections for those who voice concern.
🤔 Why you should care: This comes after OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman, came under fire last month for forcing former employees to either sign a non-disclosure agreement or leave behind their earned equity in the company, which he has now apologized for, claiming he will change OpenAI’s off-boarding procedures.

💼 Microsoft’s antitrust troubles grow
Our Report: Microsoft may have to take “additional steps” to resolve an EU antitrust campaign, which is investigating its decision to bundle its Teams communication app with its Office suite, following a complaint from Slack, a rival enterprise-focused messaging app, which accused Microsoft of abusing its dominant market position and stifling competition.
🔑 Key Points:
Following the launch of the investigation in July, last year—and in a bid to prevent hefty fines and further EU scrutiny—Microsoft decided to unbundle Teams from Office, in October.
Despite this—and pledges to roll this change out, globally—Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President, Brad Smith, believes this might not be enough to alleviate the EU’s antitrust concerns.
Smith anticipates that Microsoft will get a “statement of objections” and “formal charges” from the EU, but has expressed its commitment to finding a fix.
🤔 Why you should care: This case is just one in a growing list of antitrust investigations into Microsoft, with the biggest one looking into Microsoft’s $13B partnership with OpenAI which shows a commitment, from regulators, to level the playing field.

💥 Musk’s secret chip plans revealed
Our Report: A series of leaked emails have confirmed that Elon Musk has diverted a $500M shipment of NVIDIA AI chips, originally meant for Tesla, into his AI start-up company xAI.
🔑 Key Points:
This contradicts statements made by Musk, earlier this year, that Tesla will increase its AI chips from 35,000 to 85,000 by the end of this year to help it become “a leader in AI and robotics.”
He also said Tesla would spend around $10B on “training AI” this year, but the delayed shipment of AI chips could halt its development of self-driving cars and robots.
This move is likely to worry Tesla investors who are expecting Musk to deliver on his word to develop fully autonomous vehicles and unveil Tesla’s first robotaxi in August.
🤔 Why you should care: The redirection of AI chips from Tesla into xAI comes after Musk claimed he felt "uncomfortable" expanding Tesla’s AI and robotics capabilities, preferring to “build products outside of Tesla" until he had 25% of the voting control.

🎧 Spotify on Gemini?
Our Report: Following the release of its “AI extensions” feature last year—which enables its AI chatbot, Gemini, to connect with other apps and services—Google is reportedly working on a Spotify extension.
🔑 Key Points:
Google recently added an extension that connected Gemini to YouTube Music, which allowed people to use Gemini to find, play, and control music from YouTube.
Now, a string of code, found by a team of researchers, indicates that Google will also be connecting to Spotify, marking its first non-Google extension.
Alongside YouTube, Gemini also connects with Google Maps, to give location information, and Google Workspace, to provide summarized answers from Gmail, calendars, and GDrive content.
🤔 Why you should care: Researchers have warned that the Gemini Spotify extension could take a while to integrate, as it took months for the YouTube extension to go live, and that was just to connect two Google-owned services, this is likely to require even more complex work and permissions as its an external application.
