Newsom signs landmark AI safety bill

After months of debate between tech giants and safety lobbyists, California Governor Gavin Newsom has finally signed the landmark SB-53 bill (which was passed by the state two weeks ago), making California the first US state to mandate safety reporting for large AI developers, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google DeepMind.

The bill requires major AI firms to share how they follow safety standards and publish updates to their safety protocols within 30 days, and it will protect “whistleblower” employees who disclose safety risks.
It also mandates that companies report any incidents or crimes that have been committed by an AI model without any human oversight or intervention, such as cyberattacks and deceptive behavior.
The bill initially sparked concern among big tech firms, as they were worried it could slow innovation, but it was backed by regulators who’ve been campaigning for more transparency and whistleblower protections.

Its advanced features are primarily aimed at helping businesses automate software development tasks, as Anthropic believes that providing specialized coding capabilities will be the key to enterprise adoption.
