New ChatGPT feature that teaches?

🚨 Our Report

Earlier this month, rumors came out that OpenAI was launching a new “Study Mode.” Turns out those rumors were true: Study Mode is a built-in “learning tool” within ChatGPT, designed for students to help them “work through problems step by step instead of just getting an answer.” The idea is to encourage students to develop critical thinking skills, rather than just relying on ChatGPT to give them answers (Anthropic launched a similar tool in April, called “Learning Mode”).

🔓 Key Points

  • With Study Mode enabled, ChatGPT will give quizzes, “hints and self-reflection prompts,” and responses that are organized “into sections that highlight the key connections between topics.”

  • The feature is powered by “custom system instructions”—created with the help of teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts—so OpenAI can learn from real student feedback and make the tool more personalized.

  • Despite its good intentions, there is skepticism surrounding how effective this tool will be, as currently, there are no parent or teacher admin controls, meaning students can switch into the regular ChatGPT to get answers.

🔐 Relevance

When ChatGPT first launched, many schools banned it, fearing it would prevent students from using their brains—and studies have actually proven this to be the case. A research paper published just last month shows that students who used ChatGPT to write essays showed lower brain activity compared to those who used Google. Despite this, educators have reluctantly realized that tools like ChatGPT aren’t going anywhere and have started to embrace AI as a tool rather than a hindrance. They’re hopeful that this newest addition from OpenAI should encourage students to use their brains (well, committed ones, at least!) rather than rely solely on AI.

How AI reduced ad production costs by 90%

  • Zalando—an online fashion store—found that ad creation was taking 6–8 weeks, making it hard to respond to quick-moving fashion trends.

  • They were outsourcing photoshoots, model casting, and styling which took a long time and was expensive, making it impossible to stay agile.

  • They started using AI to create campaign visuals—removing their reliance on external agencies and physical photoshoots.

  • As a result, ad production time now takes just 3-4 days and costs 90% less, meaning they are able to rapidly respond to the newest trends.

  • Microsoft and OpenAI have been discussing a deal that would give Microsoft continued access to OpenAI’s technology, even after OpenAI reaches Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), with an agreement expected in weeks.

  • Under their existing deal, Microsoft will surrender its access to OpenAI’s technology once OpenAI officially achieves AGI, which would heavily impact Microsoft's own AI (which is built on OpenAI models).

  • These negotiations couldn’t have come at a better time for Microsoft, as OpenAI wants to transition to a for-profit corporation and needs Microsoft’s approval, which could also give Microsoft more equity.

  • After launching its new search feature, “AI Mode” to US users last month (and UK users this week)—which allows users to ask complex questions and dig deeper into topics—Google has announced new AI Mode capabilities.

  • Based on prompts, “Canvas” will automatically add and store information, over multiple sessions, into individual boards within a side panel, designed to help with things like study plans or travel itineraries.

  • “Search Live” is connected to Google Lens (Google's visual search tool) and will allow users to have real-time, two-way conversations about complex topics, which Google believes is like having “an expert on speed dial.”
