Google’s next-level AI devices

🚨 Our Report

At its annual “Made By Google” event, Google—with the help of some famous faces such as comedian Jimmy Fallon and podcast mogul Alex Cooper—demoed the new Pixel 10 series. As expected, the new range of devices are packed with AI features, designed to integrate seamlessly into users’ lives and deliver what Google is calling "personal intelligence." These are our top three.

🔓 Key Points

  • Visual Overlays is a new camera feature that uses Gemini Live to “see” via the device camera and highlight key things such as notable buildings, street signs, and information about parking etc.

  • Magic Cue finds information and gives proactive suggestions across apps like Gmail, Calendar, and Messages, eg. it can suggest a bar, pull up the number to make a booking, and add it to the calendar.

  • Camera Coach helps users take better photos. It has features that give instructions on how to take difficult, angled shots, and finds and even blends photos to make the perfect picture.

🔐 Relevance

Aside from all the flashy AI features, Google also announced that the new Pixel 10 series will be the first in the world to implement C2PA on all devices. This means users will be able to establish the origin and edits of digital content and identify what has been created with AI, which should help identify and expose deepfakes.

How AI reduced energy usage by 70%

  • Keppel Bay Tower—Keppel’s real estate HQ—was an old building with outdated systems that contributed to high operational inefficiencies.

  • As part of a retrofit, they installed a smart lighting system with daylight sensors and advanced cooling controls, with AI-powered air controls.

  • They also created a virtual model of the building, using digital twin technology, to enable predictive maintenance and performance.

  • As a result, they reduced energy usage by 70% and improved air conditioning efficiency by 7%.

  • Following in Meta’s footsteps, Grok has been exposing users’ conversations: When a user “shares” a chat, a unique link is created, which is indexed by search engines, like Google, which means anyone can see it.

  • Currently, there’s no warning about this, and so far, over 370,000 conversations have been indexed by Google, with some of the conversations including sensitive information, like personal details.

  • Although Groks rules prohibit “harming humans” or developing “bioweapons, chemical weapons, or weapons of mass destruction,” some of the chats discovered refer to making fentanyl and bombs.

  • US tech stocks declined over the past two days—with the market experiencing its steepest 2-day drop since August 1st— indicating that perhaps investor confidence and enthusiasm in AI is wavering.

  • Many analysts believe that the 2-day drop has been partially spiked by a recently published MIT study, which reported that 95% of companies investing in AI have seen zero returns.

  • They also believe that the drop has been then further deepened by Sam Altman’s belief (which he stated at a recent journalist PR dinner) that investors are caught in an AI hype bubble.
