FTC cracks down on AI giants
🚨 Our Report
The Federal Trade Commission has opened an industry-wide investigation into Anthropic, OpenAI, and other AI labs to uncover potential consumer dangers from their agent technology. The probe follows a surge in incidents involving rogue AI agents that escalated after OpenAI agents hacked the open-source platform Hugging Face in July, probing for vulnerabilities before executing a large-scale attack.
🔓 Key Points
The FTC will issue formal information demands and compel executive testimony from top AI developers, including Anthropic, OpenAI, and the research group METR, which both companies have used to conduct independent security investigations.
FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson suggested last week that developers who instruct agents in cybersecurity tests that result in hacks should be liable for any harm they cause, signaling enforcement under existing consumer protection laws.
The probe marks the first official US enforcement action targeting agentic AI risks. Anthropic acknowledged in its IPO prospectus this week that agentic AI technology raises significant and unpredictable legal risks.
🔐 Relevance
For enterprise teams deploying AI agents, this investigation signals a regulatory shift from theoretical risk to active enforcement. Companies using agent-based systems for internal operations should audit their deployment protocols, liability frameworks, and incident response procedures now. The FTC has broad authority to sue over unfair or deceptive practices, and Ferguson's comments suggest agents that cause harm could trigger enforcement regardless of intent. This investigation sets the baseline for how seriously regulators view autonomous AI risks.

Belden ran 48-hour invoice backlogs across two continents. Here's how they fixed it.

Steal this: Pull your last month of invoice processing data. Measure the gap between invoice receipt and system visibility. If it's more than 4 hours, you're losing float and creating bottlenecks downstream. Start with PDF-to-e-invoice conversion using AI extraction before layering on routing or coding automation.
How many people on your AP team spend their day re-keying or manually validating invoice data?
TOGETHER WITH DATADOG
AI spend is easy to lose track of, until it shows up as a shock on your AWS bill.
Datadog's guide to driving AI ROI shows you how to connect that spend to the infrastructure and model performance behind it. See which model, provider, or team is driving cost, alert on budget overruns in real time, and build a complete picture of ROI across tokens, models, and providers. One company, Kevel, cut AWS costs by up to $100,000/month.

Google launched Gemini 4 Argon to select cybersecurity partners on Wednesday, calling it the company's most advanced AI model to date.
The model sets new records in software engineering benchmarks, ties GPT-6 Astra and Grok 4.7 in cybersecurity performance, and leads on professional tasks across finance and legal work. Google is already using Argon internally to optimize data center memory, freeing up hundreds of terabytes without additional hardware purchases.
The phased rollout starts with trusted cyber partners while Google works with the U.S. government on pre-release safety evaluations. The launch comes one day after CEO Sundar Pichai signed a voluntary AI safety accord with President Trump and other tech executives at the White House.
Why it matters: Google's decision to launch through cybersecurity partners first signals a shift toward putting frontier models in defenders' hands before broad public access, a strategy that could set precedent for how labs release their most capable systems.
THE MONEY
Two of the week's largest AI rounds targeted consumer-facing agent platforms, not infrastructure or foundation models. Investors are betting the next wave of AI value creation comes from agents that handle daily life logistics, not just enterprise automation. Combined, these deals deployed $1.35B into companies promising to manage everything from restaurant reservations to healthcare paperwork.
Deals to know:
Instinct (Series C, $1B at $10B valuation) -- Personal AI agent handling bookings, purchases, and phone calls. Quadrupled valuation in one month. Investors: Sequoia Capital, Benchmark Capital, Coatue
EliseAI (Series F, $350M at $4B valuation) -- AI automation for housing and healthcare admin. $200M+ ARR, deployed across one in six US apartments. Investors: Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Ventures
Signal: Capital is shifting from AI tooling to AI doing. Companies that replace human tasks, not augment them, are commanding 4x valuation multiples in under 12 months.
